This workshop welcomes papers from graduate students interested in science and technology in pre-colonial and colonial South Asia. It is the workshop´s particular interest to explore the changing meanings of science and technology throughout this time, including ideas of time and space as well as the language, or translations, involved. Also of importance is the relationship between religious and scientific thought(s), the construction and circulation of scientific and technological knowledge, and the practical applications of science and technology in various domains of South Asian social life, especially in government, trade and commerce, transportation, and print culture.

Proposals of not more than 500 words may be submitted by email to Amelia Bonea (bonea@asia-europe.uni-heidelberg.de) or Paul Fletcher (fletcher@asia-europe.uni-heidelberg.de) by 31 May 2010. Final papers will be due on 1 September 2010 and will be pre-circulated to workshop participants. In addition to giving a twenty-minute talk, each participant will be asked to choose one paper and prepare five minutes of questions and/or commentary for the author of that paper. For further inquiries, please contact the organizing committee.
